Who cares? The answer is, probably no one.

According to The Wall Street Journal, "The combination of chips is particularly good for entertainment applications that are driving many laptop purchases, according to Bahr Mahony, director of AMD's mobile business." And that puts AMD up against chips from much stronger rivals Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) and Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA).

AMD's share of the laptop market is about 14% and it has been falling. Several of its products have been late to market, which is unlikely to make it a favorite with PC and server companies that rely on chip delivery timing to launch products.

While there is some chance that the latest chips from AMD could help it get share back from the competition, Wall Street is betting otherwise. Over the last two years, AMD shares are off over 70% while Intel's are up over 30%. That means next to no one thinks the chip company can make a comeback.

So, big chip companies like Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) need to figure out where to get their next spurt of growth. Smartphones and other "intelligent" wireless devices sales are rising fast, so why not take a piece of that market. One reason is probably competition, but that rarely keeps companies from entering a market that they think is promising.

According to The Wall Street Journal, "Intel Corp has been heavily promoting a new breed of pocket-size portable devices as a future market for its chips. Its competitors now hope to reap the benefits." Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN) and Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM) already dominate the mobile market and may not want to let Intel in. Other large chips companies like Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) and AMD (NYSE: AMD) would like a piece of the pie as well.

The gamble by Intel is that there will be huge demand for devices that are smaller than a PC but larger than a smartphone. They will eventually run on WiMax, WiFi and standard cellular broadband networks. The industry calls these "mobile Internet devices."

The success of the new market may swing on one large miscalculation. Consumers may not want a one-pound mini-computer with a tiny keyboard and modest-sized screen. Smartphones like the Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone and RIM (NASDAQ: RIMM) BlackBerry are already advanced "computers" and they are being improved every year.

New chips for new devices -- but what if no one wants them?

AMD headed back down after the EU denied that it has yet reached a decision in the matter. If you think this stock won't be rising too far in the coming months, then it could be a good time to look at a bearish hedged play on AMD.

After hitting a one-year high of $16.19 in July, the stock hit a one-year low of $5.31 in January. This morning, AMD opened at 7.01. So far today the stock has hit a low of $6.77 and a high of $7.07. As of 12:45, AMD is trading at $6.80, down $0.12 (-1.7%). The chart for AMD looks bullish and steady, while S&P gives the stock a neutral 3 STARS (out of 5) hold rating.

For a bearish hedged play on this stock, I would consider an October bear-call credit spread above the $9 range. A bear-call credit spread is an options position that combines the purchase and sale of call options to hedge risk in case the stock doesn't do what you think but still leverage nice returns. For this particular trade, we will make an 11.1% return in five months as long as AMD is below $9 at October expiration. AMD would have to rise by more than 32% before we would start to lose money. Learn more about this type of trade here.

AMD hasn't been above $9 since December and has shown resistance around $7.20 recently. This trade could be risky if the company's earnings (due out in mud-July) are a positive surprise, but even if that happens, this position could be protected by resistance AMD might find around $9 from its 200-day moving average.

Investors were pleased earlier in the week, when the firm announced a $100 million buyback program and then issued a solid quarterly summary. Cymer reported Q1 EPS of 41 cents and revenues of $124 million. Analysts had been looking for 35 cents and $119.3 million. Management also said Q2 revenues would be comparable to the Q1 total of $124 million ($116.6M consensus) and that gross margins would hold at approximately 48%.

CYMI shares popped on the news and have since been consolidating the gain in a bullish "pennant" pattern. Prices frequently exit pennants moving in the same direction they were traveling on entry. In this case, that would be to the upside.

Brokers recommend the issue with two "strong buys", five "buys" and three "underperforms". Analysts see a 35% growth rate, through the next year. The CYMI P/E ratio (11.47), Price to Sales ratio (1.61), Price to Book ratio (1.63), Price to Cash Flow ratio (8.09), Price to Free Cash Flow ratio (9.41) and Operating Margin (20.01%) compare favorably with industry, sector and S&P 500 averages. Institutional investors hold about 95% of the outstanding shares. Over the past 52 weeks, the stock has traded between $22.86 and $44.73. A stop-loss of $23.90 looks good here.

For the first quarter of 2008, the company reported a net loss of $358 million, or 59 cents a share, compared with a net loss of $611 million, or $1.11 a share, for the year-earlier period.

MarketWatch writes "Revenue was $1.5 billion, up from $1.23 billion for the year-ago period. Analysts had expected the chipmaker to report a loss of 48 cents a share on revenue of $1.52 billion, according to FactSet Research."

The company's survival as an independent company remains at stake. The firm said that second quarter results would be down.

AMD still carries long-term debt of over $5 billion and with operating losses it remains difficult to see how the company can attack an amount of that magnitude while still investing aggressively in R&D. Larger rival Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) has the balance sheet and cash flow to continue to launch new chips, many of which have features superior to those of AMD products.

AMD may have only two choice now. One would be to sell the company to a more successful chip operation like Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA). The other is to auction off its graphics chip operation ATI, and hope that it can get enough money to help take down a large portion of its long-term debt obligations.

Either way, AMD is unlikely to look that same as it does now by the end of the year.

Advance Micro Devices Earnings (NYSE: AMD) are due out after the bell, April 17, 2008. (Click for AMD News). Investors are starting to wonder if AMD is an Acronym for: All Most Dead?

Ever since Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) announced that it had plans to partner with Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), there has been a steady and rather disconcerting direction seen for Advanced Micro Device shares.

The real question is: Is it a buy into earnings? As that insightful financial analyst Borat would say: Ish no think so....

Goldman Sachs has continued its stance on AMD as a SELL: (4/8/08)

AMD downwardly revised its Q108 revenue guidance on Monday after the market close due to lower than expected sales across all business segments. The company now expects Q108 revenues to be -15% qoq or $1.5bn versus its previous expectation that Q108 revenues would be in-line with normal seasonality of -5% to -10% qoq. Additionally, AMD will be implementing a 10% workforce reduction by the end of Q308. We are reducing our estimates on lower revenues: CY08 goes to -$2.20 from -$1.65; CY09 goes to -$1.30 from -$0.75; CY10 goes to -$0.30 from $0.40.

In addition, there is an overriding concern that there has been a continual burn-rate that has become alarming. Now, AMD is saddled with over $5 billion of debt and only $1 billion of cash. Not the right balance for a tech company. This is even more worrisome as we have been seeing a rise in cash for many within the sector. In a recent WSJ article, Pui-Wing Tam explored some of the rationale as companies hoard money to protect against an economic downturn.

She pointed out a few selected tech companies cash positions as a percentage of assets: (source: WSJ/Strategas)
Apple: 62%
Google: 57%
Cisco :41%
Qualcom: 40%
eBay:39%

How does AMD compare to that? Not so well ...

Goldman goes on further to discuss the idea that at the rate of burn they are seeing, AMD will have no other alternative than to do some type of equity offering. Of course this will not be taken well by shareholders who will see further dilution of their holdings. I wonder why investors would buy shares anyway, unless they are hoping for a miraculous buyout/rescue.

Although, there the is the odd notion that Wall Street does not seem to care much if companies are in hock up to their eyebrows. In fact, in this market, AMD could actually thrive as investors are giving a pass to many companies with worse news and outlooks. Even so, while you just have to wonder how much worse it can get, I would not be involved here since there are plenty of other names that seem to have a much better outlook.

Recent BloggingStocks analysis on Intel/Apple/Microsoft/AMD:
The Co-Op of Three
AMD: a big mess right now
Things get worse, much worse, at AMD

Reuters Research Mean Recommendation: HOLD

Disclosure: Horowitz & Company clients do not hold positions of AMD as of the date of publish. EPS was $0.25, but asset impairment, restructuring charges, and tax rate were higher than expected, so operating EPS was stronger than consensus. June revenue outlook in-line, full-year margin outlook slightly better than expected. Stock up strong in aftermarket.

Key points

Microprocessor and chipset businesses as expected. Microprocessor units lower sequentially, with ASP flat. * NAND revenue flat as significant price declines offset unit growth.

Gross margin: 53.8%, slightly below consensus of 54%.

Tax rate slightly higher than expected: 33.5% vs. 31%, and restructuring and asset-impairment charges $329 million vs. $100 million estimate. Operating income stronger than appears.

$2.5 billion share repurchase reduced share count

June revenue guidance: In line with consensus.

Full-Year guidance: No FY revenue guidance, but gross margin guidance of 57% slightly better than expected. Customary introduction, instructions, outlines, disclaimer etc.
5:35: "Q1 marked very good start." Improvement allowed large dividend. Strong demand for 45 nanometer products. All region grew, North America stood out because of strong server demand. Server business particularly strong and recorded record revenues. All segments "healthy and balanced."
5:37: Transition to mobility continues. Unit shipments up. Shipment crossover from desktop PCs to notebook PCs to happen this year, not next.
5:40: NAND business: "making decisions" to mitigate oversupply issue. "We entered NAND to make money, and we will continue to make decisions with this in mind."
5:45: Three important trends... Competitive position of core business superb. Benefits of 45 nanometer process technology "tangible." Product costs declined, supports gross margin expansion. Momentum in new growth initiatives. Progress in product development.
5:47: ASPs approximately flat. Server microprocessor segment particularly strong. All geography segments experienced y/y growth. North America showed strongest growth. 45 nanometer server products strongest.
5:50: Taxes higher (33.5% vs 31%) because more products created in "higher-tax jurisdictions"
5:52: Outlook for Q2: planning for revenue between $9 and $9.6 billion. Flash Revenue to decline by $200 million from quarter to quarter. Strength in core business offsets weakness in NAND. R&D spending will be $6 billion, MG&A will be $5.5 billion. Taxes will be 33% for remaining quarters in 08.
5:58: Q&A begins... Answer: financial services weren't weak, looking for greater transaction speed.
6:19: Goldman analyst asks for quantification of how NAND is dragging down profits... Answer: More than we would have liked. Can't say more.
6:22: Goldman analyst asks why management expects margins to improve in second half... Answer: strength in core business... etc...
6:25: JPMorgan analyst asks about utilization rates... Answer: Utilizations are in "sweet spot," "not too hot, not too cold."
6:26: Lehman analyst asks about mobility and why operating margin decreased... Answer: More resources allocated to sector and increased advertising budget. It's the "price of success."
6:30: Lehman analyst asks whether battery fire issue will affect anything... Answer: no.
6:35: Closing remarks, call ends...

PREVIEW

Intel is expected to meet its own reduced expectations. The stock is down 20% since the Q4 release, after a worldwide glut of NAND flash memory chips (used inside cameras and other portable devices) knocked down average selling prices and forced the company to revise its gross margin expectations down from 56% to 54%.

Analyst channel checks suggest that the problem was limited to NAND sales and that PC and mobile demand remains solid. Analysts also believe that the AMD blow-up allowed Intel to gain share, especially at the high-end of the market. At a hardware company, it could be argued that the CTO is as important, if not more important, than the CEO. AMD recently announced another round of lay-offs, this time cutting 10% of its workforce. The firm also said its Q1 numbers would be disappointing.

According to The Wall Street Journal (subscription required), Phil Hester "has been closely associated with an AMD strategy known as 'accelerated computing,' which envisions the use of special-purpose circuitry being used on chips along with general-purpose microprocessors." To put it another way, he is one of the masterminds behind AMD's plans to compete with larger rival Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC).

Each piece of news out of AMD makes the company look more like a restructuring candidate. It is hard to see why Hester would leave if he thought things were turning around. AMD has more than $5 billion of debt, most of it from buying graphics chip company ATI. The company's shares traded near their 52-week low. The firm's new forecasts may indicate that AMD will have trouble generating sufficient cash flow to service its debt.

Did someone mention Chapter 11?

The Dow industrials closed 35 points lower, or 0.29%, the S&P 500 lost 7 points, or 0.51%, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 16 points, or 0.68%.

This morning, given the very light economic calendar consisting of February wholesale inventories at 10:00 a.m. EDT, the Street will likely focus -- once again -- on the troubles in financials. The top story on the Wall Street Journal is about the options the Fed is considering to alleviate the credit crunch further including "contingency plans for expanding its lending power in the event its recent steps to unfreeze credit markets fail." While such plans aren't surprising and even welcome, the report comes after the Fed showed concern the economic downturn could last into 2009 when it released Tuesday the minutes of its FOMC meeting.

And as if that wasn't enough to squash some hopes some investors lately had that we have seen the bottom, Citigroup (NYSE: C) came and reported it is close to a deal to sell $12 billion of loans at a loss to Apollo Management LP, Blackstone Group LP (NYSE: BX) and TPG Inc. as part of an effort to shrink the bank's balance sheet. Again, not surprising after what Citi's CEO said only Tuesday, and even a positive development, but it goes to show the magnitude of the problem and potential losses. Indeed, shares of Citi rebounded nearly 2.7% in premarket trading.

Still in financials, Standard & Poor's late Tuesday slashed its ratings on four mortgage insurers.

And not just financials are dampening the mood this morning, United Parcel Service (NYSE: UPS) cut its first-quarter profit guidance after the closeTuesday, as it was squeezed from both sides. On the one hand the weakening economy has reduced domestic package volume, while on the other higher fuel prices increased costs. Shares of UPS fell nearly 2.9% in premarket trading.

Earnings are due out of Circuit City Stores (NYSE: CC) and, after the close, Bed Bath & Beyond (NASDAQ: BBBY).

Oil prices were steady Wednesday ahead of the release of weekly U.S. inventories at 10:30 a.m. EDT that is expected to show gasoline inventories fell last week.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Closing Bell: Housing, FOMC Minutes, earning fears all culprits for a weaker day

Filed under: Apple Inc (AAPL), Advanced Micro Dev (AMD), Washington Mutual (WM), Garmin Ltd (GRMN)
If you wanted to look for the blame-game on why stocks listed lower most of the day, you could blame pending home sales at lows, higher oil prices, and even the FOMC minutes hinting at recession without saying "recession." We also saw the White House say it couldn't endorse the current structure of the proposed housing bill.

The truth is, Wall Street and Main Street are also coming to grips with the fact that we are about to get earnings (and guidance) from companies that we can only hope is mixed. Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE: AMD) saw shares fall almost 5% to $6.03 after it issued an earnings and revenue warning on Monday after the close. Had it not announced a major layoff plan, this would have been far worse. So much for this "growth story."

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) saw shares fall by almost 2% to $152.84 after America's favorite stock was downgraded to "Underperform" from "Market Perform" at Morgan Keegan.

Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN) saw it shares hit another 8% to $48.47, under its prior 52-week lows on what should have already been seen. TomTom's earnings warning and a subsequent untimely downgrade out of Soleil are the culprits.

The First Marblehead Corporation (NYSE: FMD) saw a bloodbath today after its loan guarantee company called The Education Resources Institute filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Just when you thought student loan companies were looking safer. One thing we'd note on this though, student loans cannot be wiped off your slate in a bankruptcy filing, so they never go away. Shares fell by 36% to $4.88.

NutriSystem Inc. (NASDAQ: NTRI) saw its shares rise a sharp 24% to $18.59 after the company upped its revenues, named a new CEO, and after a boutique called Boenning & Scattergood upgraded the stock. part of the reason for the pop, and perhaps the largest reason for the extreme gain, was the short interest of more than 20 million shares after the stock had sold off almost 80% from highs.

Washington Mutual, Inc. (NYSE: WM) did get a $7 billion financing pact from private equity firm Texas Pacific, or TPG, and others. This financing is more like takeunder financing with shares essentially being bought at $8.75. WaMu shares fell by 10% to $11.81 after a strong performance yesterday. (NYSE: AMD) stirred new worries over the tumbling economy. Novellus Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: NVLS) is joining the market anxiety after issuing a warning related to its earnings numbers. The company slashed its first-quarter earnings outlook, and said it expects revenues at the low end of the earlier expected range.

The semiconductor equipment maker now expects first-quarter earnings in a range between 15 cents and 17 cents per share, down from its previous range of 21 to 24 cents. Quarterly revenues are expected to be at the low end of the previously communicated range of $315 million and $325 million. Analysts were waiting for Novellus Systems show quarterly earnings of 23 cents a share on sales of $319.4 million, according to Reuters Estimates.

The company blamed difficult market conditions which put a curb on consumer spending for memory chips. Novellus also cited higher manufacturing spending and a bigger-than-expected tax rate. A company executive stated that the bad situation the microchip manufacturing equipment maker has to face is "a combination both of what's happening in the market place and a self inflicted wound."

The company's warning came as a sign of another negative effect of the current economic uncertainty. Wall Street has reacted by pushing the stock down 7.01% to $22.14 in today's trading.
