CPI came in higher than PPI on the inflation front, but there was a real disappointment in housing starts considering that many were expecting gains there. Oil inventory contractions across the board failed to boost that market considerably. A late day rally looked like a positive close was in the cards, but the buying action was only so much. <br /><br />Here were today's closing levels:<br /><br />Dow 10,426.31 -11.11 (-0.11%) <br />S&amp;P 500 1,109.79 -0.53 (-0.05%) <br />Nasdaq 2,193.14 -10.64 (-0.48%)<br /><br /><a href="http://247wallst.com/2009/11/18/top-10-analyst-upgrades-downgrades-initiations-adi-aci-isrg-btu-phm-rimm-stx-spwra-tgt-wdc/">Top Analyst Calls</a><br /><a href="http://247wallst.com/2009/11/18/top-day-trader-alerts-pard-nlst-drys-vvus-phm/">Top Day Trader Alerts</a><br /><a href="http://247wallst.com/2009/11/18/todays-best-market-rumors-11182009-mcdbac/">Top Stock &amp; Market Rumors</a><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/18/closing-bell-an-almost-recovery-amd-axp-drys-etfc-ftnt-vv/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Closing Bell: An almost recovery (AMD, AXP, DRYS, ETFC, FTNT, VVUS)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/18/closing-bell-an-almost-recovery-amd-axp-drys-etfc-ftnt-vv/">Closing Bell: An almost recovery (AMD, AXP, DRYS, ETFC, FTNT, VVUS)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 18 Nov 2009 16:00:00 EST. Under the terms of the agreement, Intel will shell out $1.25 billion to AMD, and will abide by a new set of rules for conducting business. The pact also includes a renewed cross-license agreement between the two chip titans.</p>
<p>In prepared comments, AMD CEO Dirk Meyer called the settlement a game-changer. "We are optimistic that it will usher a new era for our industry," he said. "We recognize that it will take time for people to understand how the operating conditions in the processor business have changed. But make no mistake -- they have changed."</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/12/advanced-micro-devices-rallies-after-settling-intel-tiff/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Advanced Micro Devices rallies after settling Intel tiff</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/12/advanced-micro-devices-rallies-after-settling-intel-tiff/">Advanced Micro Devices rallies after settling Intel tiff</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 12 Nov 2009 12:00:00 EST. Monday is a depressing day, while Friday is supposed to be the best day of the week. Unfortunately, that's not the case with chip maker <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/advanced-micro-devices-inc/amd/nys">Advanced Micro Devices</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/advanced-micro-devices-inc/amd/nys">AMD</a>). The stock closed down over 7% on extremely high volume. </p>
<p>According to <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/companyNewsAndPR/idUSN1519858320091016?sp=true">Reuters</a> coverage, AMD, which issued results yesterday after the bell, beat estimates on both the top and bottom lines. In fact, the bottom line was particularly impressive. AMD lost 18 cents per share. The belief was that the company would lose as much as 42 cents per share. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/10/16/advanced-micro-devices-sells-off-big-today-on-q3-data/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Advanced Micro Devices sells off big today on Q3 data</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/10/16/advanced-micro-devices-sells-off-big-today-on-q3-data/">Advanced Micro Devices sells off big today on Q3 data</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 16 Oct 2009 18:00:00 EST. <span style="font-style: italic;"> TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says the spike in stock prices warrants no buying until prices go lower. </span><br /><br /> I read a scary book this weekend: the S&amp;P chart book. It was frightening because there weren't more than a handful charts that aren't overextended, and many stocks have reached levels that I didn't like when their companies were doing well. Chart after chart in every business, but especially retail and industrial, have moved up so much that you have to feel like a chump to come in at these levels. <br /><br /> There are almost no stocks with growth prospects that have accidentally high yields anymore. <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/kimberly-clark-corporation/kmb/nys">Kimberly-Clark</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/kimberly-clark-corporation/kmb/nys">KMB</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=KMB">Cramer's Take</a>) and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/paychex-inc/payx/nas">Paychex</a> (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/paychex-inc/payx/nas">PAYX</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=PAYX">Cramer's Take</a>) were the only two that I saw that seemed remotely appealing, and maybe <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/philip-morris-international-inc/pm/nys">Philip Morris</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/philip-morris-international-inc/pm/nys">PM</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=PM">Cramer's Take</a>). <p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/09/21/cramer-on-bloggingstocks-passing-on-the-upside/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Cramer on BloggingStocks: Passing on the upside </em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/09/21/cramer-on-bloggingstocks-passing-on-the-upside/">Cramer on BloggingStocks: Passing on the upside </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 21 Sep 2009 09:00:00 EST. The first is that <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys">Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys">WMT</a>) reported earnings a bit better than expected and had a forecast that was a bit better than expected, to. Traders were left to ponder whether this means a modest return of the consumer or whether Wal-Mart is just that much better than its competition.</p>
<p>The government coincidentally announced July retail sales which were helped by the automotive "clunkers" program. Most analysts were surprised that the figure dropped .1%. The two pieces of news made traders reflect on the reality that the recession may be ending but the collateral damage is not.</p>
<p>Because no day can go by without some news on housing, there was date from RealtyTrac that foreclosures rose 7% last month compared to June.</p>
The day's unofficial numbers:
<p>Dow 9,399.17 +37.56 (0.40%) <br />S&amp;P 500 1,012.84 +7.03 (0.70%)<br />Nasdaq 2,009.35 +10.63 (0.53%)</p>

Earnings dominated the trends of the news and the markets spent all day trying to figure out if they wanted to be up or down. However, tech stocks have managed to rise and rise. And rise. Last night, AMD confessed to a <a href="http://money.aol.com/rtn/ap/ahead-of-the-bell-amd-shares-tumble/rfid234329274?channel=pf">quarterly loss of $335 million</a>, or 49 cents per share; excluding items, the loss widened to 62 cents per share. While this is certainly an improvement from AMD's year-ago loss of $1.16 per share, the results were notably worse than analysts expected -- consensus estimates called for a loss of just 53 cents per share.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, revenue for the period contracted 13% on a year-over-year basis, dwindling to $1.18 billion. This figure actually managed to exceed consensus estimates, which predicted quarterly sales of $1.13 billion. Unfortunately, margins for the quarter fell sharply from first-quarter levels, dropping from 43% to 37%.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/07/22/advanced-micro-devices-looks-lackluster-after-2q-earnings/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Advanced Micro Devices looks lackluster after 2Q earnings</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/07/22/advanced-micro-devices-looks-lackluster-after-2q-earnings/">Advanced Micro Devices looks lackluster after 2Q earnings</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 22 Jul 2009 12:00:00 EST. <span style="font-style: italic;">TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says the stimulus over there is actually working. </span><br /><br /> The most "dismissable" part of this advance, the one that I keep hearing about as a reason we shouldn't trust it, is that it is all "driven by China," as if somehow therefore it is phony and has to end. <br /><br /> To me, this is a preposterous analysis. I would think that anything driven by U.S. is phony and had to end. But China? They have trillions in reserves. They have a population where hundreds of millions of people don't have the most rudimentary of appliances. They have shovel-ready projects galore. They don't have unions or municipal bonds or problems balancing their state government budgets or runaway pensions. They have no legacy industries or big health care problems (at least when it comes to affording it, not when it comes to quality, which is probably pretty suspect). They have proved time and again that they can grow their economy at about 8% and when it falters they can get it right back on track, which is what they have done this time again. <p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/07/16/cramer-on-bloggingstocks-you-cant-dismiss-china/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Cramer on BloggingStocks: You can't dismiss China </em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/07/16/cramer-on-bloggingstocks-you-cant-dismiss-china/">Cramer on BloggingStocks: You can't dismiss China </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 16 Jul 2009 10:00:00 EST. The Associated Press has moved to address this problem in announcing it will begin <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/13/business/media/13press.html?_r=1">distributing stories from four prominent not-for-profit reporting organizations. </a></p>
<p>The sad fact is that many newspapers can no long pay for their own reporting from the revenues of advertising and circulation sales. The four organizations, however, operate on a different donor model. The <a href="http://www.publicintegrity.org/about/">Center for Public Integrity</a>, <a href="http://www.propublica.org/">ProPublica</a>, The <a href="http://www.centerforinvestigativereporting.org/">Center for Investigative Journalism</a>, and the<a href="http://investigativereportingworkshop.org/"> Investigative Reporting Workshop at American University</a> are already AP members, which no doubt made the decision to add their work to the wire offerings easier. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/06/15/ap-to-distribute-investigative-journalism-from-not-for-profits/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>AP to distribute investigative journalism from not-for-profits</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/06/15/ap-to-distribute-investigative-journalism-from-not-for-profits/">AP to distribute investigative journalism from not-for-profits</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 15 Jun 2009 16:20:00 EST. <p>However, the loss wasn't as bad as feared. According to Trey Thoelcke's <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/06/11/earnings-preview-national-semiconductor-expected-to-post-a-q4-l/">earnings preview</a>, National Semiconductor could have lost up to 42 cents per share. Thankfully, according to the company's <a href="http://money.aol.com/rtn/pr/national-semiconductor-reports-results-for-fourth-quarter-fiscal-2009/rfid222152432?channel=pf">press release</a> posted on Thursday after the bell, the business only lost 28 cents per share. </p>
<p>How thankful should we be? I must point out that the company earned 34 cents per share in last year's Q4 period. Also, sales dropped 39% during the past three months. Not only that, but cash from operations from the full fiscal year was down, as was the gross margin on a year-over-year basis (the gross margin increased, however, on a sequential basis compared to the third quarter, so that was a bright spot).</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/06/12/national-semiconductor-loses-money-in-q4-but-what-are-the-posit/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>National Semiconductor loses money in Q4, but what are the positives?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/06/12/national-semiconductor-loses-money-in-q4-but-what-are-the-posit/">National Semiconductor loses money in Q4, but what are the positives?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 12 Jun 2009 08:00:00 EST.
